Medical card

I have a question around the medical card.

So my girlfriend moved in to my house in Donegal.
I work in Belfast and rent in Belfast and get home at the weekends...

I get free medical etc as I work and technically reside full-time in the UK.

So I guess you could say we no cohabit albeit I am only home at the weekend.
Reading the citizens advice it says that I am supposed to apply for a medical card and if I get one then so does my partner or is she means tested based on my salary??

Anyone know what I am supposed to do here or how this would work?

My understanding of your situation is that if you're classed as a frontier worker & if your girlfriend works (employed or self-employed) in ROI she falls under ROI legislation & would lose any automatic entitlement to a medical card that she may otherwise have. She'd be subject to a means test where both her income and your income would be assessed.

To get official clarification/confirmation of this you could contact the HSE on their freephone number 1800 520 520.

I have e-mailed the HSC and got a mail back requesting more information.
At the moment she is not working, she is full time mother.

My understanding of this is that she should automatically get the medical card, I am just not sure if I am supposed to apply for one first as you say I automatically get one as I am a frontier worker but I have never had the need for one.

You'd still have to fill up an application form even though you're applying under EU regulations, enclosing a recent UK payslip. The application form asks for details of spouse's/partner's income details (including social welfare income details), so her eligibility would be looked at anyway as part of your application.

Have a look at the application form here: http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/1/schemes/mc/forms/Medical_Card_GP_Visit_Card_Application_Form.pdf
