How do I get a song played on the radio?

So we rang Radio Nova and asked if they would play the new single by Simply Red called 'Shine on'.

No I'm afraid we can't that was the reply, ah that's OK I said, so can you tell us when is the best time to phone in a song request? Never. Why? because that kind of music (bluesy type) music doesn't fit into the Nova remit! Oh well, thanks anyway, it just a thought . ..

We then rang two other stations who said that that single was not available to them yet
This I found a bit odd as surely any track can be lifted from the internet these days, (or maybe not)?

Getting it played on Irish radio seems to be a tad difficult at the moment.

So where am I going wrong? or must we just wait till it appears in the Irish charts?

PS: Simply Red sang "Shine On" just last night on Jools Holland. Cracking track for followers of that type of music, and a total return to form for Mick and the lads.

Your man standing in for Ronan Collins will play anything

Stations generally don't take requests, even on request shows, because the DJs don't pick the music. Ronan Collins show as mentioned is a notable exception.

Finding out the music director and emailing them directly is more likely to have an impact, but still minimally.

To be fair to Nova, they're a rock station and the new Simply Red is Deffo not rock . I heard it recently and maybe it was the radio feed (rte radio 1?) but production sounded awful

Ring the station find out who the music director is. And as someone said email them direct if you can.

When it comes to not being able to play it because it's not available yet, that's a case for the record companies I'm afraid. Sometimes they haven't actually sent a song to a station due to it not being ready yet etc. but I've heard of stations taking audio from YouTube and other places and the audio quality is cat.

On side note, you'd be shocked at the amount of people who send stuff to a station and it's never played and they give out then. When in fact more often then not, it's either bad quality, not suitable or most of the time they've not sent it to the right person and are literally wasting money on CDs etc.

Just download it and play it yourself whenever you like.

    Requests are so 1980s!
You'd ring up the station and your fingers would hover over the record button waiting for the first bar of the tune.

A few years ago, I 'won' a CD on a popular Dublin radio station. It was a real CD of a famous band.
They also offloaded loads of demos and unknown shyte in the envelope as well: loads of CDs of bands they had received and didn't want.

In general, in my experience, quite a lot of what you receive in the post etc just ain't any good. I remember saying this to a parent as nicely as I could after I received an awful demo the poor parent had paid to record. A career for the band beckoned outside the industry and thankfully it did. Today, they'd probably win xfactor

I would like to be able to afford to download music, but money's too tight to mention.

    :O

    I regret nothing!

"How do I get a song played on the radio?"

Simple. Buy yourself an old trawler, convert it into a radio station in a secluded port, sail it out to sea, switch on the transmitters and play your records.

    Can't fail.

I've often requested songs on radio stations, Today Fm, 2FM -even 4FM.
They've nearly always played the songs too.
Maybe you need to text in instead of ringing?
