Pay back training money

    Been offered a new job. Fantastic you might say, but been waiting on a few other better paid roles, which may not start for a few weeks after this one.

    The position I've been offered comes with 3 weeks training. It also says that if my contract is broken by them or me in the first 16 weeks that I may be liable to pay back up to 400 pounds training fees.

    They do say il get minimum wage for any hours worked however.

    My question is this.

    Surely this practise is not legal. If you are offers on the job training and you are told you will be paid for this how can companies charge you for leaving them.

    Maybe I'm naive but I thought this had been outlawed a few years back.

    For added info the job is in Belfast.

    In the Army/Navy if you leave early (while "training") you have to pay an exit fee.... but in the private sector?

    If Joe Bloggs works for a firm and is an employee, and then leaves (giving his months notice) what can the firm do?

    oh hold on... not give a good reference... that's the killer right?
