    Hi, I hope someone will be able to advise me.

    I've been on BTEA for 2 years, and I hope to return to college in September for year 3. I currently am a mortgage holder, single, and my savings are getting small. I've been paying my mortgage from my savings until now.

    Is it possible for me to claim Supplementary Welfare Allowance (SWA) to help me with an extra payment to be able to pay my mortgage?

    I know that Mortgage Interest Supplement is not available now but can I claim SWA? Is it a top up to Jobseekers Allowance? I'm very unsure about all this.

    No, SWA is basically only for people who are either waiting for another DSP payment to come through, are not entitled to another DSP payment, or have another need e.g. exceptional dietary or heating needs, unable to pay utility arrears, back to school clothing & footwear etc.

    Now that the MIS has been discontinued your only real option is to rent out a room or to come to a reduced repayment/restructure agreement with your mortgage provider.
