Cherry tree, strange growth?

I cut this out of the middle of a neighbours cherry tree for them recently. Just out of curiosity any idea what caused it to grow like this?

Wow! Looks like Witch's Broom which is caused by a fungus. Never saw it that severe!

You often see it on birch too.
