Tus - mature college student question

    Hi guys,
I have just finished first year of a full time degree course in college and will be going back in September to start 2nd year. I was on BTEA during my course and just signed back onto JSA for summertime and I got a letter about applying for position on Tus programme.

It says its a 12 month period of part-time work and as I wont be available to work for 12 months due to college commitments, can I just say no??

I read on another thread that someone got JSA cut down for saying no because they were planning on starting college in September so I am a little hesitant to say no just in case, any ideas?

    Thanks

Just put on it that you are on BTEA and in the middle of a degree and will be returning in September.

Ya, that's what I was thinking. I will give it a go and see what happens.

    Thanks

Yeah I'd just go in and say to them that you'll be returning to college at the end of the summer. I'm sure they won't be able to cut you off because you said no to a Tus course when you've got bigger plans for college.

I'm going back to College in September so I explained that I wouldn't be able to take up the Tús placement for very long. The woman in the SW office said 'that's fine', took photocopies of documentation from the college etc. and then told me that I could decline the scheme and tick the 'No' box. Subsequently I received a call asking me to go to see an employment officer as they've said that I refused to participate - I explained the situation to the man on the phone and he said that they now 'track' those who decline (or as they call it 'refuse') to take part. (Do they just input information in to a computer and not take account of individual circumstances?) Anyway, I will go to see this man in the next few days, but I'm worried that my payment may already have been cut (which I feel would be very unfair). Can anyone give me some advice? Thanks in advance! (I'm worried sick :-) )

I'm sure that if they cut it, it would just be for the week and would probably get back dated. While it's probably annoying that **** like that happens, it's actually not bad considering that it's a way of forcing people who aren't doing anything to get involved in education or learning.

Must be what you said though. Must be a yes or no selection on the box. If you explain the situation to the guy in person I'm sure everything will be fine. They would prefer you go to college than a Tus course any day.

    What's an Employment Officer?
