Hi, I'm recently finished college for good last week. I was offered a internship today in which I am willing to do. The boss said that he will cover my expenses by offering me a payment of €200 a month.

With regards to social welfare how does that work? I don't start the internship until the 16th of June. So I am signing on for Job Seekers allowance until then. Will I be put on a job bridge even if I get expenses?

Basically what I'm trying to say is, how will my social welfare payments be handled if I'm doing a internship for 6 months with my expenses covered?

    Thanks.

So I'm better off doing nothing for 3 months and then getting an internship?

Are you living on your own or still at home?

Im still at home but I have the option of moving in with my girlfriend if it is more beneficial to do so.

In order to sign/qualify for jobseekers allowance, you have to be available and actively seeking work, which you won't be doing if on your internship, so I don't think you will get anything re. welfare payment.

I wouldn't say that - experience is always better than not working, and you're expenses are covered right? ...

I would see if you can try and get more than 200 euro from the internship if your expenses are not in fact covered (which could be risky for you) or better still, try and get a full time paying position between now and the 16th.

Ultimately, it will end up being a personal decision between short-term pain and long-term gain.

FFS. I gone through enough short term pain at this stage. I did a six month internship as part of my college work placement with the same company last year. I honestly dont think I can live off €50 a week.

Im fairly certain you can't get an internship if you've worked for the company before, just so you know. You'd want to to into your local office and find out more.

First one was probably work placement as part of third level course so not an internship as such.

Op you have to weigh up the benefits and drawbacks of the internship. If you think there is a good chance they will offer you a job afterwards or if you think the internship will improve your chances of getting a job someone else because of the experience gained, then it may be worth the "short time pain", if neither is likely, you can decide to sit on your arse watching TV in your parents house or emigrate.

Well you never said you worked there before for six months - that is relevant, so you really should provide all relevant information as the advice people give you may be different.

With that new information, I would say you are in a better position to negotiate (personally I think you should not accept anything other than a job offer - both parties should know after six months placement if you're employee material). Your work should be valued by an employer (and you).

There's your starting point for deciding on how to move forward with this next stage of your career / life.

Hang tight n get a job instead. A young lad I play ball with was in the same boat last year, offered 2 internships after a few interviews after finishing his degree.
Got a job in the low 20's a few weeks later. After doing 6 months with them they know the crack with you n are just looking for an eejit to work for nowt.

    Only take the internship if:

    (1) There is new experiences to be had at the company. 6 Months is enough.
    (2) There is a job-offer on the plate at the end of 6 months, not just a renewal.

You are building your career, what building blocks are available at this company?

If you struggle to answer then look elsewhere.

Don't take it. Find a job that actually pays, low twenties is fine to start with. Companies need to stop trying to get free labour out of grads.
