    I've been gifted a 40l fish tank

I'm looking to stock it with community fish, I'd preferably looking for fish that are easy to manage and quite hardy.

My preference would be small fish and maybe something interesting like inverts.

What would be the max population on a tank that size?

What do I to take into consideration before I start buying fish?

Any recommendation on easy to manage beginner fish?

    Thanks!

40l really is a very small tank, realistically, you couldn't hold much more than some shrimp or perhaps a couple of Galaxy Rasbora. Maybe a single betta (siamese fighter fish) but you'd have to keep him on his own.

A lot easier to work with! :)

Have a read of the "cycling your tank" thread as a starter. Plenty of small fish you can keep in a tank like that: Zebra Danios, White Clouds Mountain Minnows, a few Guppies, Mollies, various Tetras etc. Depending on the size of the fish, you'd be maxxing out at roughly 7 - 10 fish.

If you're based in Dublin, head into Gavin and James in Newlands Cross or the guys in Seahorse and they'll be able to show you the type of things you can stock.

I'm in Dublin, I checked out the seahorse website its quite informative, I had never heard of that place but will pay a visit.

    Thanks for the reply :)

One thing to note about Seahorse is that because they're so good, they're very, very busy. Visit mid-week if you want to get advice as at the weekend you really could be waiting.

It's one of the main reasons I go to Newlands Garden Centre. Gavin that manages it used to run his own store (Artane Aquatics) and is far better for taking time to help customers with the benefit of the knowledge he's gained from years in the industry.

"cycling your tank" thread, some good info there too thanks again

I might try Artane Aquatics first and make sure i don't come home with any incompatible fish.

A friend of mine (lad giving me the tank) put a siamese fighting fish in his tank, the lad in the pet store told him it was just a name and it was friendly but it attacked and bit chunks from his guppys tails so I'd prefer some expert advice on the mix i choose.

Artane Aquatics was unfortunately one of the victims of the recession but Gavin is now working for Newlands. He's the reason that I'd consider them the exception to the rule of thumb of only buying from aquatic specialist stores (as opposed to pet shops where you get advice like your friend got from well-meaning but ultimately inexperienced staff).

http://www.aqadvisor.com/ is a useful resource to give you an idea of the levels and types of stocking you can do once you have an idea of the types of fish you want to add to the tank.

Seahorse are very good but insanely busy, I got tired of all the waiting when I go.
Des in MaxiZoo Finglas is fantastic, really knows his stuff, it's the only "regular" pet shop I get fish from.
