Birth certificate - wrong spelling

    Hello,

First I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this.

My query is, my own birth cert has the incorrect spelling of my first name. My parents never had this corrected.

I was brought up spelling my name how they had wanted it spelt. I only realised there was an error when I was older applying for a driving licence, passport etc. So for official things I have to use the spelling as per the birth cert.

I didn't bother me too much when I was younger but now Its really becoming a problem, I recently bought a house and all important official documents have the wrong spelling.

I am pregnant now and when it comes to registering the birth later this year, I really want to be able to use the correct spelling of my name on my baby's birth cert.

Its only one letter that's wrong and I know it may seem trivial but I want to be able to right down my name how its supposed to be without worrying whether it will cause administrative issues.

I have tried ringing and emailing various services to go about correcting this finally but not getting any answers. Citizens advise, general registration office etc.

If anyone has come across this and may be able to point me in the right direction I would be very grateful !!

    Many thanks :)

This might be the way to go but i see you say that you hav e contacted them already. Calling in to an office might be needed.

    taken from here --> http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=77797153

    from www.groireland.ie (originally)

Section 7. Corrections of Errors and other Amendments.

A birth certificate is a legal document and cannot be amended unless there are valid reasons to do so, as the Civil Registration service has a duty to protect the integrity of the records held. In circumstances where the information given AT THE TIME OF BIRTH OR RE-REGISTRATION was incorrect or flawed, there are a number of provisions and procedures that must be followed in order to amend the entry.

    7.1 Clerical Errors

In cases where an entry contains a misspelling, a juxtaposition of the particulars (e.g. surname and forename entered in the wrong order) or other clerical error, this can be addressed under the provisions of section 63 of the Civil Registration Act, 2004.

Any interested party (e.g. parent, relative, civil partner or the person to whom the entry applies (if an adult)) may apply in writing to any Superintendent Registrar (via any registration office) for the correction of a clerical error. An administrative form for this purpose is available at any local registration office, and must be completed and returned to the Superintendent Registrar, along with some documentary evidence of the correct spelling, etc. – (unless, of course, the error is self evident). If the Superintendent Registrar is satisfied that a clerical error has occurred, the entry will then be corrected

You could also get a passport based on you having evidence of the correct namebeing used for 2 or more years - i.e bills in this name for the past 2 years. This is called common usage

Then in the registration process use this as ID and they should amend the birth cert at this point.

Also on the Birth Notification Form (Form BNF/01) you get in the hospital spell it correctly i.e as you see it and that will go to the registration process. They might query it there or not as its a first name.

I was speaking to a person who works in BDM office, yes it is possible to change, go into your nearest BDM office and they will give you a form to fill out you will need proof of something of things that have been sent to your home in the spelling you want to change to, they will give you more details at the office
