Part time farmer schemes

    Hi guys,

I work full time off the farm but recently purchased around 12 acres and a farmyard. I grew up on a farm and love the life and its something I would like to get back into full time when my parents retire.

I keep about 20 cattle, 10 yearlings and 10 bucket reared calves. I don't have a green cert. I wouldn't lease as I love being back tipping around.

I'm wondering If there are any schemes, payments etc. that I might be eligible to join. Id obviously like to secure anything that I can for the future. Glas seems like an option but doesn't really make sense for my small parcel. I don't think that I am eligible to apply to national reserve for the young farmer payments. I have no entitlements but not sure If I can just buy them.

If anybody has any tips in how to maximize income on such a small holding, id be grateful.

    Thanks Dave.

Hi, maybe speak to a local teagasc rep and he/she will point you in the right direction as to what you are and aren't entitled too, and apply to schemes for you, lot of deadlines coming up so be quick about it

I'm in a similar position myself. I get area aid and the sheep grassland payment. That's about it. My teagasc advisor advised that it wouldn't really make sense for me to join the BPS yet. He said to keep farming for a few years and then see what the situation is. Apparently I missed some deadline for a couple of years back so am not entitled to join this years scheme.

    How about Farm Assist payment.

Thanks all. I only bought it 9 months ago. Area aid might be a starting point. I'll try Teagasc and see what they say.
