My 2.0L GTV won't start, haven't started it for 6 months or so, posted in Alfa forum but no joy. The red injector light is on, should this go out or stay on till it starts? Any pointers please?

If it's been sitting for 6 months it could be several things. Battery comes to mind.
Did you try jumping it? Does it make any noise at all?
It may have juice for dash lights but not to start car.

About light, have a look at this http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-147-156-andamp-gt/370439-injector-warning-light-156-2-5-v6.html

Check air filter and plugs, fuel filter.

Has it lost the memory for the key try both keys if you have them.

As said above battery very possible.

Immobiliser key going off or coming on atall?

I used battery from my Ducato so loads of juice. It turns over fine but no start, will check spark in the morning and then see about fuel. I though maybe somebody has come across this before and could point me in the right direction. Thanks for the link.

Key light comes on then goes off after a second or two.

See if you can jump from a car instead. Bike batt might not have what it takes to crank a car sufficiently.
Possibly bad old fuel too (not very likely), or the fuel pump doesn't start.

Edit, just realised you said Ducato, not Ducati :D

Bike battery..... NO DUCATO not DUCATI, 2.8 TDI, 100amp/Hr battery! OK just saw edit, don't think battery is problem anyway, thanks

That was my thought as well. Op have you asked on the gtv forum on alfaowner?
    Best place to ask

Just checked on my own gtv there, red light which is the eml light goes off after about 5-7 seconds in the Mar position. That light generally means that there's a problem with a sensor.

Where are you located op? If in the greater Dublin area might be worth giving Don baker a shout

Yes first thing I did was post there but no reply at all, I did say that in the original post! Code light is going out OK

"red light which is the eml light goes off after about 5-7 seconds in the Mar position"
What does eml stand for? Whatever it is it's staying on! having had a look on the net I've just tested the crank sensor and not getting a reading on it, should be 900 Ohms. Perhaps this is the problem.

    EML - engine management light
Means "something somewhere in engine is wrong, get fault codes read for details"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 291 ✭✭digger58

The light showing is a depiction of an injector, I don't think there is an engine management light on the dash, not like on the modern cars anyway.

Seems to be an eml alright. Fault code scan should speed up your search.

Something similar happened to a friend, turned out he opened the door with the key in the barrel as the battery was dead then jumped it but it wouldn't start as he never turned off the alarm with the button on the key so immob was kicking in. Worth a shot!

Thanks for that, I was thinking of the symbol most on modern cars that shows and engine, I tested the crank sensor last night and not getting a reading so going to swap it with a known good one, I had a previous issue with the crank sensor but never got around to replacing it. Hopefully that will fix it.

Spot on.. a very common failure mode on the 2.0 TS engine.
    Best of luck!

PS are you interested in selling your GTV out of interest? (worth a shot)

Replaced that today, some bitch of a job, obviously someone in Alfa design has an extra joint between elbow and wrist and an arm 1 mtr long. Injector light is now going out, it seems to be making an attempt to start but I had to put the battery on charge. Fuel pump is now priming when ign is on. Hopefully I'll get it in the morning, anything else to check? No reading from old sensor, 887 Ohms from replacement.

They are an arse to do anything on! Try an alternator change...

I was going to suggest leaving the battery out and trying in the morning. For goodness sake make sure the key is out when reconnecting it!!!
