Rear wheel bearing is gone in my 06 mkv Vw Golf, got quoted for 212 euro to repair it, any idea of what this should cost?

I had the nct done yesterday and failed on rear wheel bearing, I know a guy who does this kind of work and is very cheap, PM me if you want his name and number op, he is based just off Naas Rd, in D.12...

That price would be about right for a genuine VW bearing.

Cheaper bearings are available which would save you about €50 but they aren't good quality.

george I am looking at Meyle or Febi for my E46 325ci m sport, are they decent? Also this "genuine" vw or bmw thing is a bit misleading, they simply get them from Meyle, Febi etc and put a vw stamp on them and charge a far higher price, the car manufacturers dont make a huge amount of their car related components...

That is true but in this case the difference in price between an OE (VW branded) bearing and an OEM (SNR) bearing is less than €5. The VW bearing comes with a 2 year warranty which is valid in any VW dealer so it's well worth the extra €5!

The only thing genuine about a genuine part from a main dealer is the name on the box. VW, Toyota, Mercedes or any car maker don't manufacture car parts. Bearings, fan belts, filters etc are all manufactured by different companies, eg Timken, SKF, Cooper, Bosch, Fram. Car makers just pick a manufacturer for their parts and call them genuine.

You can be sure they are quality controlled and meet the standard. Cheaper parts are made to a price and more often only has cheaper going for it

Still no guarantee you're getting the best.
