Lake Garda or Sorrento?

I am posting on behalf of my parents who are looking to book a holiday in Italy in September. They are in their mid 70’s but active and enjoy sightseeing, walking, beautiful scenery and good food. I was in Malcesine in Lake Garda a few years ago and loved it so thought it would be perfect for them. However a few people have mentioned how beautiful Sorrento is and I am wondering if it would perhaps be a better fit for them. I am wondering has anyone been to both and could compare them? How would they rate in terms of walking, restaurants, scenery, cost etc. If they went to Lake Garda, I think Malcesine would be their choice as it is so beautiful, but I am worried they would find it a bit of a hassle to get from the airport as they won’t have a hire car. I appreciate any input, I know it’s kind of a vague question!
