Hello, I'm gonna be doing the LC in the near future and I want to do computer science.

I live in Dublin, and I want to keep it that way.

I got 345 points on my winter mocks, which is pretty bad. But to my credit, I didn't do Russian which is going to yield me at least 75 points, but hopefully 95 or more. If I lowball Russian in place of my ordinary French C3, then that's a nice 'n' round 400 points.

This puts me at 5 Higher, and 1 ordinary subject. The ordinary subject is math, which kind of sucks. Although, I got 83 on my winter mocks and 87 on math mocks 2 weeks ago, so I hope that I'll satisfy the B3 minimum in the UCD course.

    I'm left with this:

    DT228 - Dublin IT - Computer Science : 405

    DT211 - Dublin IT - Computing : 375

    DC121 - DCU - Computer Applications : 400

    DK821 - Dundalk IT - Computing : 300

    DN201 - UCD - Computer Science : 470

    GC430 - Griffith College - Computing Science (Dublin) : 240

I have no idea how to order it. Probably ucd, dit, dcu, and then whatever else I throw in as a safety net.

UCD might be a long shot, but it's worth a try. Might get lucky, you never know.

I honestly don't know how the LC is going to go, I'm not hoping for much so I won't be disappointed. But, my main goal would be to hopefully get into DIT. But then again, I'm practically going in blind into all of these courses. All I know is that DIT is more 'practical' and less focused on theory. I've been to UCD and DIT but the facilities don't necessarily reflect the quality of education.

Can anyone explain what's the difference between the two DIT courses?

    Suggestions on order?

    Did I miss anything?

    Anything else?

I can only really speak for the DIT courses.

I'm in second year of Computer Science (DT228) and compared to 211, there is more theory to it (hence Computer Science). However, compared to other institutions from speaking to a few people is that the DIT Computer Science course is more practical than the UCD and Trinity courses.

But the two courses are basically the same. Both have relatively the same main modules (Programming, Databases etc).Computer Science just focuses more on theory but can be more practical compared to the likes of UCD etc.

There are also two other Computing related courses in DIT:

DT282 (Computer Science International): shares most of the modules and lectures together with Computer Science but there are some different modules (international aspects of the course IIRC) and you have to learn a German or Chinese and go to Germany or China in your third year. Points last year was about 375

DT211C: I don't know too much about this course but it is a CS course that specialises more in computer infrastructure. Points are about the same as DT282

I graduated from DT228 in 2014. I had a few friends who did DT211 also. There isn't a whole pile of difference between the two courses. Computer Science is a little more geared towards building software engineering skills as opposed to Computing being more of an all rounder. Both are good courses through and almost everyone I talked to have got a job in the industry since.

I'd put DT228 ahead of DT211 if you want to get into a software development career.
