    Hi,
I recently bought an old house. There is a phone cable hanging off the side of the house. See images in link.

Does anyone know how this is supposed to be wired?
Or should I just contact Eircom and get them to sort it.
I work in I.T so I'm comfortable crimping and so on but I can't seem to find any information on these cable colours. For a start there seems to be three red cables.
    Any help is appreciated.

Eircom drops are normally black with 4 wires, you have 7? (assuming its really 8). As its non standard cant say for sure but if the line is still on the MDF you should find +-48v across one pair, test with a multimeter. In any case youll still have to order a connection with a telco (Doesnt have to be eircom).

The white/orange is a pair and the black/green is a pair.
They are both solid copper and if you strip back the outer insulation far enough you will see that they are twisted around one another to make a pair.
The red stranded wires are steel for strengthening the wire as it can be used for overhead drops.

    Thanks for that.
It's definitely 7 wires. (unless there is an 8th further down the outer insulation.)
That cable is an overhead wire coming from the pole to the house so the strengthening wires does make sense.
I'll be at the house tomorrow evening to do a spot of cabling. I'll let you know how I get on.
    Cheers.
