    Hi there

Trying to get some info on planting a tree with my daughter this summer. I had stupidly assumed I could just inform the council I was going to plant one on killiney hill and they'd be thrilled but unfortunately this is not the case. Does anyone have any advice for me on where to go next? We want to plant it ourselves rather than just pay for someone else to do it and receive a certificate. I'm going to ask her school as well but am guessing they may be reluctant in case it brings an onslaught of requests.
    Anyway, any thoughts welcome. Thanks

Not an easy thing to do really unless you can find a willing landowner.

What type of tree is it?
    What is it's provenance?
How long has it been in a pot?
Did you buy it bareroot and pot up?

As a last resort you can plant the tree in a large pot with a large tray under it (to keep the container water at field capacity) and enjoy it for many years that way, even on a balcony. It will become rootbound, but the roots and top can be pruned every few years to balance the tree to the size of the tree to the container. A 50L container is more than adequate for that purpose. I did this with many species of tree when I had a very small garden in London years back.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated. Seems we may have to think of an alternative. We really wanted to plant it somewhere we can visit regularly rather than in my parents home etc which will eventually be sold. I am wondering if a school might be an option although they may well think I'm crazy if I ask!
