    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/news/fake-nct-gang-are-raking-in-thousands-by-duping-customers-31227327.html
An organised crime gang in the Ballymun area are raking in tens of thousands of euro each week in a sophisticated scam involving high quality forged NCT certs.
The Traveller mob are being actively investigated by specialist garda units in relation to their scam which has been ongoing for a number of years on the northside of Dublin.
"Essentially what is happening is that this gang are buying older cars at the lower end of the market, mostly for sums of less than €600," a source explained.
I'm pretty sure I saw a thread within the last month of someone getting hit by a fake NCT cert, but it seems many more don't even know that they've been scammed!
"It is not unusual for them to buy a banger of a car for €300 that has no NCT or tax and then sell it on to an unsuspecting customer for €1,200 once they have all the forged certificates in place," the source said.
Does the NCT number specify what sort of vehicle that is certified?
A number of major operations are planned against the dangerous Traveller mobs.
    About time!

To be honest, anyone who gets caught with the fake nct cert has not been minding their business.
10 seconds on the nct website will tell you if a car has a valid test or not. There is no mystery or need for guesswork.

modnote: Should go without saying at this point, but please think before you post - we do not need a traveller bashing thread, or generalisations based on being a member of the travelling community. Thanks

It's amazing that NCT don't publicise this facility more, given how embarrassing having loads of NCT certs stolen would have been.

I never knew about it until now tbh.

Edit : just out of curiosity I logged onto nct.ie site. It does not state that any car reg can be checked. There is abutton to check your car reg. I'm assuming that any car reg can be entered here, and so checking a car that you would like to buy. But this should be stated a lot more clearly IMHO.

I don't think many people know that you can check the nct website tbh. Far too many take the cert on the window as gospel.

I would say has something to do with we pay cash for car signs.

It is disgraceful this is going on for years and with the technology available nothing changes.

All phone numbers linked with these should be tracked or blocked completely.

Its always funny that you hear the cops know but can't touch them.

As someone who witnesses this happening on a fairly regular basis - I find it very hard to believe these guys are taking in grands every week. I've been offered certs and cars with bogey certs a lot in the past only to be asked if I have a smoke afterwards.
