grafting apples and pears

    is it possible to graft apples and pears onto hawthorn rootstock?

    There both in the rose family, but why would you want to graft them. There is plenty of rootstocks for apples and this wouldnt be the time of year to do it. I wouldnt say family compatibility would be close enough for it, but i could be wrong.

    reason why is that I have loads of hawthorn hedging and a few crab apples want more fruit in the hedges and just for fun :)

    You could try budding now or in the next few weeks. While the sap is flowing and the bark will peel away easier. You have nothing to loose by trying, but in my opinion the closeness is just not close enough, could be wrong though.
