For the last couple of weeks, the N11 has these rubber bands between various exits, and sections, stretching over the road, are these just capacity and research related.

Are they the two black things you see across the road in various places?

Yes they are the ropes attached to the road.

Seen 2 new northern reg transits fitting them there last week after 12 at night.

They had camera sytems fitted on bridge for southern cross where the big ram statue is for a day.

I would hazard a guess they may be looking into fitting anpr systems in the future and getting as much info on roads to see what traffic situations are like.

I always thought they were speed monitors to see if they needed to build speed bumps. So the one on the way into the Coynes Cross Applegreen is only a counter?

It depends where they are placed.

On N11 it would not be for ramps but then I suppose we are in Ireland anything could happen.

They are used for traffic volume calculations. How many cars during what times. They don't care about speed.

Edited thread, as I mustn't be the only one who clicked expecting to find out about a truckload of elastic bands all over the N11

They are out in Blanchardstown aswell beside the shopping centre, it was wrecking my head as i didn't know what they were for.

Traffic volume, speed, No of axles, time of day, exits in use, etc.

There's no end to the amount of info available, they only don't care about who is driving.

They're starting to look as tho they might fail. Seem to have a lot more slack in them yesterday!

Looks like it, I was behind a lorry going over one in glen o' the downs on Friday when it whipped upwards about eye level and snapped back to the road a fraction of a second before I drove over it, wonder what would've happened if I caught it with my bumper!!

They used a similar system in South Africa decades ago for speed traps, I remember my dad telling me how a well timed stamp on the brakes would take care of them. ;-)
