    Hey

Engine oil light says level low.

Just got oil changed and engine serviced last year (April 2015). Tag on the engine says 15w30.

Local garage only had 15w40. Can I use that, is it safe to mix?

    Cheers

    I've never seen 15w30.

Is this an old old car because 15w40 is unlikely to suit anything from this century.

Do not put that in your car unless your absolutely stuck. Try and get 10w40 at least. If you have to stick it in change you oil asap.

Its imperative you use the correct oil in VAG vehicle's. 5w30 is the correct oil so long as it meets vw specifications.

507 00 is the spec for 06 tdi passats. It should list specs on back of the oil bottle

    Use castrols oil selector

Cheers. Think I'll just drop her around to my local mechanic on Monday. Don't want to mess it up.

I kept the receipt and bottle ain't up so can return it.

Question though, if oil was changed last year why would the light becoming on. Does it mean the engine is the burning oil. ?

Not being bad but you should be checking oil regularly tbh, not waiting for the light.

Your service is probably set to 18000km/2years or something similar. Too long IMO. I'd recommend ignoring that light and just change it once a year before the NCT so you don't forget. All engines burn a drop of oil and may leak a bit. Extended service intervals result in increased oil consumption(burning oil) as the mileage clocks up on the engine. Leaks will also develop as rubber seals age.

I checked my oil level over the weekend - it was between the min and max

Once I did that the oil level light in is no longer on?????????????

Not sure what you're trying to ask with all those question marks, but as long as oil stays between min and max on the dip stick everything should be ok.

Well if you checked it when the engine is cold and car is on level ground and if oil was needed you topped up between min and max...that would be why your engine oil light went out!!

Isn't there an issue with the oil pump balancer shaft on the early 2.0 tdi engine? Perhaps it's low oil pressure rather than low level?

Thought that was just the audis. Could be wrong. It was the a4 model around 2006 with the 2.0 tdi that had the oil pump problems.

sounds like it could be an oil pressure problem knowing now the level is fine

    Pastas and superbs too.
Has there not been a recall or goodwill for that c0ck up at all? Could they have rolled it in with the 170 injector recall?

Iirc orange oil light is low level and if it shows up red its oil pressure

Oh and do not put 15w40 in the car. Its wayy to thick. 5w30 is readily available in petrol stations etc

Yep, RED oil light is the "sh1t yourself and stop immediately" light.

Nope. its a joke. George Dalton knows all about it. So do I :(

2005 2.0TDi started the problem. Chain driven initially, weak tensioner and poorly designed (poor fitting ) hex key which connects / drives the balancer shafts. Typical fail shows up circa 100K. Plenty of complaints across various fora. Not restricted to Audi. Across the 2.0tdi range. Problem corrected with major, expensive surgery, ideally swapping out the unit for a geared system. Later models less prone to failure but any with the hex key are a legitimate concern.

I was scheduled to drop mine down to GD in portlaoise a few weeks back but never made it. Left it with an indy to tackle locally. Sourced the parts from UK. Getting belted at the same time. Work completed yesterday. Changed driver side hydraulic engine mount at same time.

    PITA.

I didn't top it up. Just checked the dip stick when car cool and on level ground. And hey presto light went out and has stayed out for 4 days now.
