Staying with friends... Looking to keep up training for ROK so looking for a 40 mile ++ to do tomorrow. Don't know Cavan that well so was going to stick to hard shoulder on main roads. Would s trip to Virginia be safe?? Or Belturbet on new bypass ???

The new bypass of belturbet is top class, beautiful surface and safe. Only around 38km to the round about at the end and back.

To extend it go straight through the roundabout for Derrylin, about 3km out take a left sign posted the yellow road, nice rolling road that takes you into Ballyconnell. At the end you can take a left and return via the main road back to the roundabout outside belturbet. This final stretch can be busy. Would add 18-20 km.

If you wanted to extend it slightly further about 2k before the roundabout there is a right turn for Miltown, take it, and at the end of the village turn left, this will take you back out onto the bypass about 5/6k from Cavan. Really lovely road and you avoid repeating yourself on the belturbet bypass.

The playful side of me would say heading any direction away from Cavan town would be a good idea, keep the head down and don't make eye contact with anyone, they smell fear!

Is there any resource online for good cycling routes? Strava has the odd few but it'd be a good idea for tourists.

Great advice from Gallant JJ. Was going to suggest the same route. Cavan Tri club use it on a Sunday morning and they usually have a big group out. You can get all the details on their Facebook page.

Bellavally Gap which goes up the side of Cuilcagh is about 45km on main roads from Cavan Town. Its a cat3 climb of 3.6% at 7.3km long. Go straight through Ballyconnell and then Bawnboy then a left just before derrynacreeve an then a right straight after that. Its a nice gradual climb. Heres the link
    https://www.strava.com/segments/1266937. Have a nice time.

Thanks JJ. Parked in Woodies and headed out on your directions. Done great till Ballyconnell and took a turn to Ballinamore. On to Newtowngore and then a left back to Ballyconnell. Then a right to Cavan and then realised my mistake on your instructions. So ended up doing 80kms... Am happy out. !!!!

Brutal cross wind on bye pass heading out. The last 7kms coming home the bypass was a hell of a crawl!!! Legs were stinging top and bottom

Watch out on that Newtiwngore road to Ballyconnell to a house with 2 vicious Golden Receiver dogs who jumped their wall and went for me. Only for water bottle squirt.. They had my leg!! Have tempted to ring Gardai in Ballyconnell ro have a word with owner....

Otherwise great scenery and great roads!! Ye should be proud Cavanmen of yer roads!!

    Hope to be back!!!

I'd suggest the quickest way out ;)
