Noticed this wind sock today, well it's been there years but I only start thinking about what it's actually for today. It's on brewery road in Leopardstown, beside the reservoir where what looks like a pumping station or something is.

Just curious to know would anyone know what else these are used for beside aviation because there is no landing site nearby.

This link should work for its location

Most likely when they add chemicals to the water they know which way the wind is blowing in case of spillages and fumes etc.

Wow, never thought of that to be honest. Makes you think about what comes out your tap though

LOL. Chemicals are metered by dosing pumps, not just dumped in.
More likely this windsock warns drivers of high sided vehicles of cross winds. I presume its placed where drivers can see it.

If you were to look at any big manufacturer/ chemical companies etc they have them in place so to know in the event of a spill or leak what way the wind is blowing.

You may laugh, but it's placement is definitely not for vehicles it's for reservoir, so please explain that then.

I'm not sure of the reason for that particular windsock but there's one on Blessington Lakes where the rowing clubs do their training. Maybe there's a need at times for a boat on the reservoir for cleaning/maintenance....? I'm just thinking out loud here so might be well off the mark.

They use chlorine which is poisonous. I lived beside a water plant when I moved to London a few years ago and they have a air raid warning sounding alarm and the first time I heard it I jumped out of bed and ran expected to see a mushroom cloud. I literally **** the bed. A few weeks later they sent a letter saying that it will look like fog and to get to high ground :/

It's for chemical spills. Those metered doses they put in have to be stored somewhere. Its a legal requirement.

Strangely enough it's not listed as a SEVESO site. But maybe they don't hold enough to bring them in to the scope of those regulations.

The site is run by Dublin City Council and to be fair to them when it comes to H&S they usually go over and above.

Oh I've read some of her stuff alright. And having had cancer twice before my 20's it's always on my mind what we're drinking from the tap... :(

A tiny amount of chlorine is added to the public water supply to reduce bacterial spoilage (when you leave water in your kettle for example) and lessen the chances of infectious diseases from being spread though the water supply.

can we maybe all post photos of our favourite windsock ? I saw a grand one in MAD once, there it was, blowing in the wind, the locals said it was about 6 ft long but it was 6 1/2 if anything.

Hands up if you knew that the wind socks used at airports are calibrated!

The wind sock appreciation thread. :D Newbie question: how is a wind sock calibrated exactly?

When I was younger, I grew up near a sewage treatment plant, and it had a wind sock.

    -. . ...- . .-. / --. --- -. -. .- / --. .. ...- . / -.-- --- ..- / ..- .--.

No need to be confused Google is your friend. Unfortunately the explanation involves lots of use of the word "erect" :p:D

Surely that'd make the sock very stiff...

Well I'm just going to call BS on that one - in MAD nobody knows what a "ft" is:P.
