When he's young they're from his parents and ancestors, the older he gets, the more progeny he has (hopefully) the more data there is on him and eventually his stars (and his ancestors, to a lesser extent) are more accurate. The data is collected from weighings and carcase grades at factories and marts. Maternal is more influenced by how regularly a bulls daughters calve, the weights of those calves at weaning (milk kg).

Have you looked up a bull on the icbf website? Any questions we'll try to answer them, but I honestly think no one has all the answers!!

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Wouldn't his stars be affected then by the quality of cows the bull is put on, are the calves creep fed etc.? I mean the bull could look great with one farmer and poor with the next?

Yes, or if a bull produces cracking weanlings and they are bought by some old lad who castrates them, feeds them hay for the winter, stemmy grass for the summer and eventually slaughters them at around 3 year old, it's not going to do the bulls terminal stars any good.

When I look my cows on the icbf website some of the best ones are 2 stars and the worst breeder is a 4 star. Or am I reading the info wrong.

No you are not wrong, it's just that icbf's opinion and your opinion on what's a good cow are different:confused:

Easy calved Bulls seem to get lots of stars and high eurostar ratings while the opposite seems to be true for harder calved Bulls, especially on the maternal index.
The problem with this is that easy calved Bulls often breed cows with poorer calving ability than cows off harder calved Bulls.

I wonder will there be any way to appeal a cow/heifers star rating if you believe it to be completely incorrect for her?

Yes i think calving difficulty should not influence the overall eurostar of the bull. It should be seperate let the farmer decide If he wants to use an easy or harder calved bull.
