    Hi lads,

The top tube of my bike was completely bust by someone trying to steal my bike. I'm wondering if it can be replaced or is the bike finished. Its an aluminium frame and it cost about €700.

What complete cnuts, no need for it, whatever the rights and wrongs (okay wrongs only) of stealing a bike, but to damage it just because they couldn't get it, just says complete cnuts.

Don't suppose it was insured, eh??

Some barsteward tried to destroy the u-lock by using bike as a lever.

That's why I always use secondary lock to secure the front wheel and part of the frame to the other side of the a Sheffield bike stand. Doesn't work with lampposts I am afraid.

thanks for the replies lads, the lock was on the top tube and they must have hit it a hammer, I was kind of hoping that someone could saw off the top tube and maybe weld on an aluminium bar but I guess its finished.

That'd work with a steel frame for sure, maybe a metal worker could rescue this but I think aluminium is a lot harder to work like that.

I had a bike stolen - they left the lock in bits behind them - I think this is almost worse.

I guess you could strip it down and sell it for parts or see if you could pick up a cheap alu frame and stick the parts on that.

Might be more hassle than it's worth but hybrid frames are cheap enough, example below. You'd have to do a cost benefit analysis.

i'd bring it back to the shop and tell them you hit a small pothole and that happened. claim it's a warranty issue. hey presto, replacement frame.

hahahahaha, yeah i might try that

Try adverts.ie usually some decent frames knocking about e.g. http://www.adverts.ie/bike-frames/cannondale-caad3-road-bike-frame/7508738 or you can probably snag a carbon bargain if you wanted an upgrade.

I'd look at getting a new frame and salvaging the parts, or sell the parts and get a new bike.

Has anyone ever replaced a top tube?

Repairable with the right tools. You'd have to strengthen the crossbar inside though.

Its an alu frame. The top tube is cracked near the seat post. Bent waaay too far for straightening.

    A 100% write-off.

That thing is goosed, and its only a rapid, just buy a new frame

even if you could repair the top tube - it's been shortened in being bent, and in doing so may have damaged the joints around the bottom bracket; the seat tube and down tube angle would have been made more acute. you'd never be able to trust the frame again.

Sorry, that's awful. As to why the scumbags decide to destroy what they can't steal elevates them to a whole new level scumbagdom!

    ..its only a rapid..\

Rapid or whatever, nobody should have their bike vandalised.

You'd buy a higher spec frame for less than what it would cost you to repair that frame. It's only fit for the bin.

sorry op. thats a very annoying problem. scum

I think thats one of the funniest replies I've read in this forum, really gave me a laugh ~ could you imagine the craic chancing your arm lol :D

That's an absolute sickner OP. I can't believe someone would just vandalize a bike like that, its almost like it was done for kicks instead of a theft.

    Assholes.

Some locks break before the frame does. Also group set and wheels can be sold on

Something like this, a Dolan frame for £199
Nice project to build it yourself to get something positive out of what was done to your bike

True, but has tapered headtube - probably will not take the existing fork. Or perhaps there are adapters available?
