Transplanting Whitethorn

Is it possible to transplant Whitethorn at this time of year?
I have a field with whitethorn growing about 2 feet high. The thing is, they need to be cut away now as they are out in the field. The other side of the field has no ditch and I plan setting some there. It would be great if I could just transplant them there.
How deep would I need to dig them out?

    You sure they're not blackthorn?
If they blackthorn - get rid, as they're a curse...

The garden centres will recommend not planting hedging once they've started to grow leaves or flowers i.e. in May. However I planted whitethorn quicks in the dry May of 2013 and had no problems all survived!

Whitethorns are hardy & vigorous. If you bring a decent bit of earth with you and water well they will be fine. I'd imagine a sq ft of earth would be adequate. You'll prob leave a bit of root behind but they will grow away. I have often planted bare root whitethorn slips with leaves on them at this time of the year no problem. Work away.

Ya, i'll chance some of them. It seems a shame to be cutting them to the ground when I will be paying for quicks next winter.

Cutting them back some would encourage branching and reduce water loss until the roots regrow.

I transplanted whitethorn in June before. All the leaves died off but grew back later in year. Land is so wet they will most likely survive.
