Looking around at some VAG automatics, would I be correct in saying that all from about 2006/2007 onwards are DSG or is there some which have a standard automatic box? Have been looking at adverts and some say DSG in them and some don't even though you can see the DSG letting on the gearstick.

Seems to be a couple different styles of DSG shifter too...

Tiguan didn't have DSG, was the standard 6 speed auto

Up! has ASG which is basically a single clutch automated manual
The Amorak uses a modified version on the 8 speed auto in the A8. Bottom gear is like low ratio.

Most of the naturally aspirated petrols were/are standard auto rather than DSG.

Would someone mind explaining what dsg is and the benefits?

Has twin clutches and drives. 1, 3 & 5 on one 2, 4 & 6 on the other. Two gears are selected at all times but only one clutch is closed. If you're in 2nd and accelerating, 3rd will be selected in anticipation so when it comes time to switch, it just opens one clutch and closes the other. Then it will select 4th and so and so on. Makes for much faster and smoother shifts Compared to regular autos, tend to be more economical than other autos to.

Thanks :) so unlike the ohs merc where you feel it switching it's more silent?

The boss has an auto pass at cc and it's very smooth

Afaik the 6 speed DSG was more reliable than the early 7 speed version.

Seems to me that at a cert In level of constant revs next gear is ready to kick in and does so

Probably not so relevant to the OP, but I rented an Skoda Citigo with the ASG recently. The box was surprisingly jerky between changes as the car really lurched when power was re-engaged once in gear. I found the effect so pronounced that I'd warn against these. I was also amazed that there wasn't some way of electronically managing the throttle/clutch better to smooth this out. Indeed, I found I could smooth the experience a little myself by anticipating the gear change and throttling off a little when it was made, but you shouldn't have to drive around second guessing your car. However, I'm sure this problem doesn't afflict the DSGs.

    I enjoyed that video.

Nope. ASG and DSG are completely unrelated, ASG is effectively the same as Ford Durashift EST, Toyota MMT/Multimode or Citroen Sensodrive. Ie shoite.

There is; it is a software update which owners have reported has made the ASG transmission less jerky although not perfect.
I could live with ASG as I have a very smooth driving style but others would find it completely intolerable. I drove a very nice demo groove up! loaded with gear and it was quite a pleasant experience but the ASG still is slightly unnatural.

I've never driven a system like that that I could live with every day. You can adjust your throttle inputs to reduce the jerkiness, and use them in manual mode to avoid surprise changes, but in reality they're infuriating.

Interesting. Good that they addressed it. Still I find it remarkable that it went all the way through product development as it was. I wasn't driving with a leaden foot, but I still found it queasy making.

I remember asking a Taxi driver about his DSG and he said it was great. He did mention a hugely expensive gearbox repair bill, but he still rated it highly. Plus, I don't remember feeling seasick during that journey.

    Just to recap
    DSG good
    ASG bad

    Remember Clarkson described DSG as
"Like having a gentleman butler in the gearbox to hand you the gear you want"

They're really nice, I have a Golf DSG and it drives beautifully, it's really smooth between gear changes and it always seems to know what gear it should be in but most times I can only tell by looking at the gear number on the dash, there's barely a flicker on the Rev counter as it does its stuff.
By contrast I'm in the U.S. at the moment where all the cars are auto and the difference between the ones I've driven since I got here and the DSG is enormous. My current car here is a brand new Chrysler 200 with all the bells and whistles but the auto gear box is like a lazy version of DSG, you can feel every gear change and it sometimes feels like it hasn't a clue what gear it should be in.
