    hi guys,

i am looking to buy a product from the usa, its costing about 260 dollars , i rang the import office in nenagh and she gave me a tariff classification number , luckily 0% duty only vat to be added.
i emailed the shop in usa and they said i can pay by paypal for it , is this safe ?

i sent the tariff number buts it not on the paypal invoice , the shop in the states dont seem to know what to do with tariff number , i reckon they dont export that often .i havent paid for it yet .

who do i give the tariff number to, i thought the shop as they will be posting it, right ? or what do i do ?

i assume courier collects the duty if owed . or do i give the tariff number to them on delivery?

    never bought from states before

    cheers mac

Its the Irish State that needs the tariff number - so they can deduct any duty and vat. Just buy the item and have it sent over. Paypal are 100 % reliable.
The only problem buying directly from shops in the US is that a lot of them defer directly to an expensive courier like FedEx. If you used a forwarding agency like www.shipito.com they will offer other services like USPS which are cheaper........but you have to pay their fees of course. Generally, for items under 4 lbs using Airmail economy is the cheapest but takes about two weeks.

You will be charged VAT on the shipping, for this reason I usually ask for the cheapest shipping possible, which is usually through regular US mail not couriers.

I also find stuff tends to slip through regular mail without charges while I am nearly always charged on stuff through couriers. Though if its €260 you are likely to be caught.

Not only is the postage cheaper with regular mail but an post will be charging you an admin fee, which is €6, while couriers can be about €15

$47 is about €42. So if its a courier that is €9.66 in VAT and about €15 courier admin. So 42+9.66+15 overall €66.66

It if could be done through regular economy mail for half the price €21 it is €4.83 +€6 an post charge. So €31.83 overall for the shipping.

On ebay I assure sellers I know it will take longer and not leave negative feedback
