Does anybody know the right steps to take to get volkswagen diagnostics? I'm a volkswagen head as are most of the family so will get plenty of years out of it.

I know there are some dud suppliers of cables as well so can anyone recommend a good one.

Alternatively can anyone recommend the best bluetooth dongle for running the torque app?

UK supplier of the genuine cable.

As for the various dodgy versions, you pay your money & you take your chances.
I bought an €80 copy back in 2009 and it has full functionality for my 08 audi. Seeing as its dodgy, it cannot be updated and as such it wont work on newer stuff so at the end of the day, the genuine thing is probably as cheap as you will get many years out of it.

The Irish distributor is Logic Automotive.

If you are thinking of buying a genuine unit from the UK Derek from the ilexa has an exellent aftersales reputation and is highly recommended, otherwise Logic Automotive as mentioned are the official Ross-Tech Irish distributer for VCDS. You will find a full list of distributers here.

I agree that Derek is great to deal with. Have bought lots from him over the years and found him very helpful and professional.

The demise of the Ilexa forum was a big loss to the motor trade IMO.

Another thumbs up for derek , sorted any issues I had over the years very quickly and at a good price. The forum was extremely good but with no control on access its understandable that it went by the wayside

I had a look at the website and the VCDS Promo Kit is 400 euro. I just want to check and clear the codes on my own MKIV 1.4 Golf, and on whatever VW or Audi I buy to replace my car in the near future.

Am I better off just buying the cable from them and downloading the VDSC Lite software from Rosstech? Would that work? Or buy one of those cable/mini-CD combos that you see for sale on Adverts. I wanted to buy something decent but I'm not spending 400 euros on it. I just wont get the use out of it.

For basic checking and clearing of codes, official vcds is overkill. I bought a 20€ cloned dongle on aliexpress and ive gotten 4 years of great use out of it. It connects to and older version of the software from 2011 but provides full functionality on any vag before that date
