    Hi There,

I'm currently training to be an architect - I have been working in an office for several years now but not doing the work I am particularly passionate about i.e. non-design oriented projects.

I would like to take time off from working to develop my portfolio/ tailor it to appeal to the kinds of firms I would like to work for. I still need an income however while giving myself time to do this.

I was thinking of offering planning application services for domestic projects by posting ads online - just wondering if anyone has had much experience of getting work this way? And if so would it be sufficient to keep me ticking over till I get organised with portfolio/ design work etc?

    Many thanks

Can you not take on a planning application or two outside of your normal working week? Can you not prepare a portfolio outside of normal working hours?

No one can comment on whether you'll make a living, that's down to your skill set. If you were to go out on your own, initially at least cash flow Can be difficult. Winning & dealing with new clients will be rewarding, some can need a lot of hand holding, which takes time to learn to manage, and you'll no doubt need to price keen to get new business, before you find out how to pick work that suits you ( & that you suit the work). It'll be a few years before you have adequately timed/ continious cash flow to make a living on your own. How you market yourself is up to you, some have used the paper, more use social media & website, Networking , then word of mouth etc. if you intend on joining the riai review their guidelines.

unless you are exceptionally talented, with superior people skills, then stick to the day job, maybe go down to a 4 day week but you would be barking mad to try set up on your own now,
The new BC rules and the increased completion from abroad for vanilla planning apps is going to make that market very tight
