Flash fiction - Break the glass

It was cancer. The descent was fast and horrendous. We did what we could but it was never enough. We cried and put in the hours round our father's hospital bed.

'Break the glass!' he kept saying. Days and nights dissolved outside the window.

'Break the glass!' I wiped his spittle and kissed his hollow cheek.

'Break the glass!' I closed the curtains.

'What have I reared? Break the glass!' he begged.

His pain-scarred face, unshaven jawbone, those caged eyes. He was not my father anymore.

He died on a Monday gazing into the mirror at the foot of his bed.
