Denis O'Brien wins Lifetime Achievement Award

Embattled billionaire businessman Denis O'Brien, whose attempts to injunct RTE from broadcasting a program which mentions his alleged dealings with IRBC (formerly Anglo Irish Bank) should be judged upon today, (Friday 15th) can take solace in his award last night of a Lifetime Achievement accolade from the Irish high-tech industry.

The annual Tech Excellence Awards, organised by Mediateam long-term publishers of various trade mags, past and present, for the local tech industry bestowed the Lifetime Achievement award on the Malta-based tax exile and benefactor of the Republic of Ireland soccer team for his services to the industry which included the launch of the first independent mobile phone service (Esat Digifone) and its sister company Esat Telecom which he flogged off to BT for a 13-figure sum at the height of the tech boom and, er, that's it isn't it?

The judges bravely ignored the adverse findings from the Moriarty Tribunal which declared that Mr O'Brien's winning of the second mobile phone licence was "almost beyond doubt" due to payments he had made to minister Michael Lowry, a finding Mr O'Brien has always disputed.

I'm sure all here will be delighted to congratulate Mr O'Brien, who is notoriously litigious, on the well deserved recognition of his business talents.
