Insignia is getting really old now, it's being on sale since the end of 2008. 2.0 litre cdti engine feels a bit unrefined these days compared to it's rivals. Opel resale values are not as good as VW plus the Passat is a brand new model only launched a few months ago. 2.0 TDi is nicer than the 1.6 though.

If you are looking brand new, then the 163ps Insignia engine has gone - may be some still around in stock though, but it's been replaced by a 170ps version.

Haven't driven one yet, but feedback is that it's much more refined than the 163 it replaced.

As far as value for money goes, the Insignia has a much better level of standard specification than the VW. Currently best in class now the Superb isn't currently available. Probably drive a better deal on the Insignia as well - tends to have more discount available than the Passat. Big touch screen Nav system on the Insignia is a very good system, and actually works with voice commands as well.

Passat will be worth more come trade in time, but from a whole life cost perspective (servicing/fuel/depreciation) then Insignia will probably cost a little less - although that could depend on which wheels - 18" tyres that a lot of the Insignia's have are fairly expensive, but look a lot better than the 16" wheels that most Passat's come with.
