Probaly a stupid question but If you take a break period from driving say 3.5 years would you lose your no claims bonus i.e do you have to be consistently driving from one year to the next to build it up?

2 years and you lose it.

Depending on your age it could be worth insuring some non runner after 1 year 11 months to give you a fresh 2 years from there.

If you are uninsured more than 2 years you lose the NCB, this is general for all companies afaik.

Can I ask another possibly stupid question? What do you mean by insuring a non-runner? I am considering moving abroad for 2+ years but I really do not want to lose my NCB. I'm presuming a non-runner is a old spare car lying about?

A car that is not in use I would presume. It would probably still need to have a valid NCT though I'd imagine.

You should look into the criteria for various driver policies. Not sure if you need to you need to normally need to live with the person. Might be worth checking out. If you were to visit a family member for one month a year and have use of their car, it might include allow you to meet the required criteria.
Note the caveat "might". I have always been insured in my own name personally. Check out the T & C of various insurers and brokers. I am without car myself a little over a year and have been considering the same but have not got around to it yet. :pac:
