I work for a company which is crazy busy at the moment and there is talk of some having to step down a level to help out. If i am approached to do this do i have the right to ask for redundancy instead?

As long as the pay is the same, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Clear the backlog, then go back to your normal job.

I have no problems helping out but this is the kind of thing where one month could lead to 12 months very handy, I also would have an issue with the fact that there are a lot who are temporarily in other departments and they wont be asked, my position at present is "permenant"

    Are you looking for redundancy?

Help out and if it goes on for longer than you're happy with, raise it with your manager. Next step I suppose would be to look for a new job.

I have one lined up, I just really want to know if im entitled to redundancy if my current role is deemed unecessary

I'd doubt it as I don't think they are making your position redundant, just asking you to help in another department temporarily. If the new job is what you want, go for it.

What does it say in your contract...?

Previous contracts I've had said that I could be deployed wherever (Worldwide) the company saw fit, at whatever grade they wanted if the business deemed it necessary, and I was. The only thing it didn't allow them to do was drop my salary.

What exactly does stepping down a level mean? Is it permanent also?

Asisstant manager to admin, we cant see the place getting quieter and we,re not hiring so its likely to be 3 months at 1st then a pile of extensions

So, you have another job lined up and what you're wondering is....can you swing for redundancy, even though you are planning to leave regardless. Do I have it right?

No I dont want to leave, the job elsewhere is always open to me but its less hour lower pay, if I get the redundancy package they have given others in a similar position I can pay off the mortgage and happily go with the other job
