Can I claim jobseekers allowance whilst living in caravan or car. My apartment has just been repossessed by the banks from the landlord and I have to quit the place next month. I have a claim from that address for JSA. If I lived in my car outside the address and collected my mail from the post office would that be ok?

no replies, so I'll chip in with some positive words....

There is an eccentric man near to where I live who has lived in a caravan for years, I think there was a disageement with the wife, its in a corner of her one-off rural house. The postman knows the story and he has post delivered to the caravan, so I suppose it is possible to have an address yes.... e.g.

"The White Caravan", outside No. 5 Riverside Drive, Ballybeg

once you have that address on a few pieces of official correspondence, maybe even electoral register it becomes your address

although what about the property charge? hmmm, you are creating a new property that would not be subject to the charge.... or maybe the fact that it has wheels makes it different

I don't see why not, if it is your place of residence, then it should not matter what your living arrangements are

So you're about to be thrown onto the street through no fault of your own. Is there nothing the council can do to help you ? Surely you shouldn't have to resort to sleeping in a car.

The council told me there's nothing they can do as a single person is not a priority. They said I could see if I could get a place at a homeless hostel. He said it could be worse, at least I won't be in a shop doorway as I have a car to sleep in.

The council can assess you as in need of housing. There may be a timing issue as you are still housed. If you've been renting for more than six momths you can apply anyway for rent supplement. Again there may be an issue as regards your current address, but you should speak to your local DSP Local Rep (CWO) asap who should be able to advise you on a solution to both of the above issues. This is what they are there for (your welfare) so don't be afraid to approach them as well as contacting Focus Ireland.

Find your local CWO's clinic & times here: http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/otheroffice/community-welfare-office-contact.aspx & speak to them asap. Don't get fobbed off by a porter on your way in. Insist on speaking to a CWO in person as a matter of urgency. It may be the case that the CWO refers you to a different clinic or tells you to return at a different time, but the main thing is to get speaking to one.

Your main issue is your currently and adequately housed and your not homeless yet .
Hence why the council's won't engage you .
I'd personally be looking for a room to rent in the mean time .
And check in with your local cwo as Cushie recommended
