Laughably slow "broadband" from Sky

I just activated a "broadband" connection for a relative of mine in central Dublin.

Internal wiring's all been checked. It's basically the raw incoming phone line going directly into an eircom splitter-socket (central filter) and there's no internal wiring so it's absolutely not a local fault.

Honestly how they can sell a service THIS bad in an area with UPC 240Mbit/s service is beyond me.

I will be horrified if they attempt to hold us to this in contract.

Line stats? Assume its one of those reach lines from CRA.

    Stats
    Broadband Link	Downstream	Upstream
Connection Speed	1024 kbps	128 kbps
Line Attenuation	41.5 dB	26.0 dB
Noise Margin	29.3 dB	31.31 dB

Unfortunately they installed it based on Sky bumf that came in the letterbox.

    And yes, it's on CRA.

Fault's logged with eircom, but I am not holding my breath.

Thats not a fault! That's the port profile. Call sky. That line can do 6-8Mb fine. Its just a config they need to select.

It's logged with Sky now anyway.

They seem to have passed it to eircom though as a line fault.

Just checked with them it's profiled to 1Mbit/s for some reason !!?!?

Even at max speed (about 5.1 Mbit/s they reckon) - it's pretty pathetic for the location.

Why would they have profiled the line to that slow a speed?!

FTTC isn't available here. The lines are direct fed to Crown Alley

New line I'm guessing? If its brand new it wont have been prequalified so they'll default to 1_128 to get it up and running.

The brits(BT) have a nice system called DLM that would automatically handle the profile change after 48hrs, but no such magic here. Sky should have changed it as soon as you called them.

The 5.1 theyre reading is attainables, they'll raise as the profile does. 7Mb would be my guess.

It's a new DSL service, yeah but it's a 50+ year old line.

Edit: I've just been told that it was probably in service since the 1920s!

If there is UPC why didn't they order that?

The limitations of DSL are well known at this stage. Long lines = slow speeds. 7Mbit won't be too bad.

No idea why not.. I did explain this could be a major issue, especially with the lack of e-fibre at the address.

    Still no change!

    Speed's actually dropped very slightly

    DownStream Connection Speed 1023
    UpStream Connection Speed 124

I don't know what to make of them

According to the calculations online based on attenuation it should be connecting at up to 7.388Mbit/s

It's also connecting using ADSL rather than ADSL2+ !?

Its laughable sky haven't reprofiled that yet.

No harm in making it a bit public, I didn't post any public info about the connection tho .. :)

It's running on a BT DSLAM not Eircom too, so perhaps eircom's DSLAMs do auto-profile correctly ?

I doubt we'll be seeing any improvement until next week at this stage...

    Nah, nobody does DLM here.

Even with a BT DSLAM its a flick of a switch to change it.

That's surprising, as I doubt eircom, BT or anyone else uses anything unique in terms of DSLAMS.

They're pretty much off-the-shelf products from Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Huawei or whoever.

AFAIK, eircom were using pretty decent Alcatel ADSL2+ DSLAMS, surprising they wouldn't have that service available.

    Update:

Now the voice service is fairly unusable.
They sound like they're talking from a huge distance away ....
