Electrical work required on a 1960s house

    Hi,
We're having an electrician come out to look at a 3 bed semi built in 1965. We suspect that rewiring may be necessary, but just looking for some advice before the electrician comes out.
The fuse board looks recent enough, it looks like it has 1 fuse and about 10 trip switches, but the wiring is definitely old in parts. Most of the light switches are the originals, and some of the ceiling lights have the old twisted 2 wires. There have been some additional sockets added, but the wiring is along the skirting or the walls. the lights also dim when the electric shower is turned on.
We will be looking to get additional sockets installed as well as changing the socket wall plates. In total maybe an additional 16 sockets and moving maybe 4 of the existing ones.

Does anyone have an idea of the ballpark figure that we're looking at to have this done, and can an electrician move/add the phone sockets for the broadband router?

I know we should shop around for a quote, so in general will small contractors be cheaper than larger ones?

    Thanks!

I would imagine that you would be looking at a partial rewire if not a full rewire because of the age of the house, the amount of extra sockets and by the sounds of things you are probably hoping to modernise the house and get rid of existing lights and switches.
To be honest I think a large contractor would probably not be interested in this job so best bet would be to get at least 3 quotes from smaller contractors and go from there. Without seeing the house and work involved it would be very hard to put a price on it.
