Can they be plugged into a wall socket to charge them or are they only USB?

The can go into a wall socket same as a mobile phone.

Depending on your phone you can use the same cable to recharge your phone from the power bank as you use to charge your power bank. Just swap the ends around. All this needs is a USB plug and you are good to go.

Do you have to buy the connecting wire for your specific phone separately?

It comes with a micro USB to USB cable so if your phone uses one of these then you should be OK.

Thanks for that, so I could just use my own Apple cable and connect to it and away I go?

Yes you can plug any usb cable into these and it will charge it up.

I have the Anker Astro E3 10000 battery pack and i use it for hiking trips, it would charge my S5 from flat 3 times and still have a little juice left.

I have been using anker products for about 3 years and i have to say the build quality and customer service are outstanding.

I have one of these and it is great. I think I paid 15 pounds or so.

    That is a great price.

If anyone bought the new Macbook. The one with new USB-C connector. You can use these to add some extra battery life to it. The one in the OP might be too small, but 16000mAh would extend life quite a bit.

Another plug for these super little units. And a nice bonus is that if you take it from the "man drawer" after several months of zero use, you'll be amazed at the power still available. You'll have well over half capacity after 4-5mths.
