Cavity wall insulation mess!!

    Hi
I live in Galway and I had the walls pumped and attic insulated a few weeks ago, both at separate times, due to the company been busy! A couple of days after getting the walls done, there was a massive build up of condensation. The walls were dripping, water dripping from the curtain poles, windows were sapping in all the bedrooms, even ones that were not been used. I got onto the company and they sent someone out. Turns out, they were suppose to vent the attic and put 4" vents in all the bedrooms. the house is on a high hill, very exposed to wind and rain. That was done, now a lot cooler in the bedrooms due to the vents, walls are still stained though. We got an engineer to carry out a thermal imaging scan. The attic was very poorly insulated. All the edges, about 1 foot from the corner are not insulated. All the tops of the walls are not insulated. A huge difference in temperature apparently. And the walls that were pumped shows inconsistency. Very shoddy work. We have not paid for the work yet and feel our house is now far more worse off than before. Not only has the company handled the matter very unprofessionally, they did not assess the house properly according to the SEAI. There was no boroscope done, cavity checked or measured. It turns out, there was insulation board in the cavity and there was only an inch or so left to pump. The attic does not look like there is 12 inches. Barely looks like there is 6 inches! The company also applied for our grant which I think is against the rules. Just looking at the best way to handle this going forward. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately, it looks like you relied solely on the insulation company to advise you on making your house more energy efficient / comfortable. Grants make a lot of people drop their guard in this respect; in that their normal caveat emptor process is suspended because their house is eligible and the installer is registered for the grant.

Find the agrement cert on the NSAI website for the cavity wall product used and read it.

Contact the insulation company and go through the issues one by one. Depending on their response, contact the SEAI.

There should be no un-insulated areas of the attic after the works.
It is easy to measure / verify the insulation thickness applied.

It sounds like your house was under ventilated before the works. Proper and appropriate ventilation is very important in a house. There are better ways other than the "hole in the wall" type of achieving this however.

If there was insufficient cavity to fill because of the presence of an insulation board, the cavity should not have been filled.

Btw, the top of the walls may well be un-insulated because there may be no cavity there to insulate! This and inappropriate ventilation may well lead to mould growth on this part of the wall in the future.
