Difference between 5 series/A6/ E Class and Mondeo/Passat/Insignia class

Current car BMW E39 sport 525i. Mainly had BMW over the last few years and thinking of moving to an e60 or early f10 very soon. Just browsing the usual sites looking at prices etc and then I started thinking about the class below which includes Mondeos, Passat etc...you know the type I mean (ok maybe 2 classes down if you include 3 series, A4 etc in between). The reason I started thinking about these cars is because of a particular car, the new Mazda 6. I was in one at the weekend and think it is a stunning car, didn't drive it to get a feel for it but I think I will ask my friend for a spin. Really my question is, what are the differences in the likes of the Mazda 6 and a 3 series, and what difference again for a 5 series. I could buy a new Mazda for same money as a well used BMW. Would the likes of these be way behind in driving dynamics or are the Germans trading on reputation alone in charging much more for the same standard of car. Honest question. As far as I can see a Mondeo or Passat is closer in size to the 5 series/A6 than the 3 series/A4. Really, really like the Mazda 6 at the moment!

The gap gets narrower with each generation of models being launched. Premium branded cars can be more about the brand and it's image than the packaging or value for money depending on how much you spend. Cars from traditionally non premium brands are getting much better, the new Mazda 6 and Passat being examples of this.
