Anyone know if private Garda cars have speed detection systems like anpr systems? If so did Anyone on here get caught speeding By a private cars speeding system before? How long does it take for a FCN/FCPN to arrive when detected speeding by this method?

    Apologies if a similar
thread has answers to these already.

    You mean unmarked?

Can you explain how you thought you got caught?
    ANPR doesn't catch you speeding.

yeah! I exceeded the speed limit a bit by accident . Pretty sure a Unmarked car appeared to flash me .i was just wondering do these cars have anpr systems.
AFAIK anpr systems do detect speed? Open to correction though...

    Was the car stopped?

ANPR is supposed to scan reg numbers and check if they have tax/insurance etc. in practice they don't though.

No was driving in oncoming traffic towards me...

    You're safe enough so.

It couldn't accurately detect your speed if you're both moving in oooosite directions and at uncalibrated angles.

If driving in oncoming traffic you they can't tell your speed, they would need to be stopped.

Thanks for replies people, just was being a bit paranoid as I thought these anpr systems could detect speed in any direction( depending where camera is I suppose) . I guess I'm safe enough Thanks again :)

It's Automatic Number Plate Recognition, not magic.

Was pulled twice by a garda with ANPR when I got my new car. The reg didn't update with my details and it turns out the previous owner was banned, so they pulled me. Both times I was driving against them too. Wonder if they'd ever pull people for tax?

Oh unluckiy! I contacted the guards and it appears the above statement made earlier is incorrect , it dosent matter what direction or how fast u are going if one of the cameras are facing you your caught...

My SiL bought a new car and the paperwork was delayed; she got stopped by an unmarked garda car using anpr specifically for not having tax.

    yes but not for speeding.

ANPR isnt being used in Ireland anymore due to database errors.. I believe when they were using it the system was constantly beeping for cars with no tax lol

Saw that first hand, talking to a garda at the side of the road in a traffic corps isuzu and every few seconds was a ping....

    It worked in both directions

As for speeding, they'd have torn after you if you were milling the road out of it and given you a good telling off

Anyone who can't separate the following statements and realise they are not mutually exclusive needs to hand in their licence.

ANPR reads number plates. Whether you are coming towards them or driving away from them. In a civilised country there would be an up to date database of tax insurance and nct status to check the reg against.

Detecting the speed of an oncoming vehicle from a moving vehicle at uncalibrated angles is not practical and not possible with current garda technology.

That's not true. It's not being used to check insurance, it's still being used to check for tax and stolen vehicles.

I wasn't aware that that technology was available anywhere, found that out the hard was in New Zealand, cop car coming other direction stopped turned, caught up with me and gave me a ticket.

A ticket for... what? The purpose of my post was to differentiate between number plate reading and calibrated speed detection. Getting an unspecified ticket for an unspecified offense doesn't add much info to thread?

It is still being used to check for tax and for registration purposes - scrapped/stolen vehicles etc. However, the insurance part is no longer being used because the insurance companies haven't been supplying up-to-date information to the Gardaí meaning there were far too many cases of people being stopped who did in fact have valid insurance.

Gotta wonder how accurate any information available to them really is though...

Probably thought you were going a bit fast and measured your speed when he caught you up
