so recently my 03 VW 1.2 polo has been rattling and making a loud roaring noise. It's not smooth to drive at all and cuts out ridiculously easily. I've been to a mechanic and he said that of the three cylinders in the engine only 2 actually work. He recommended that I got a new engine but they are proving hard to find! Has this ever happened to anyone else before? Or could anyone recommend a cheaper solutions?

Thrashed exhaust valves seem to be common judging by posters on here. No compression in one cylinder?

"Gone"? I think we need more info. Did the mech tell you exactly what the issue is?

It's not uncommon for cylinders to stop firing when the lead to the spark plug stops working, but the mech would have known that.

Had a cracked cylinder on a punto a good few years ago. Advice was get a new engine or get rid. I got rid, managed to trade it in.

Did the mech say why the cylinder wasn't firing?

Odds on favourite has to be the "burned exhaust valve on cylinder 3" engineering fail.

It could be something as simple as faulty spark plug (HT) leads. A common VW fault in SI engines of that vintage.

A new engine sounds dramatic (and profitable).

Did he plug it into diagnostics to diagnose .

First thing I would do is replace all 3 spark plugs , cos Polo's are notorious for giving trouble in this area .

Is the car losing power ?

Can you now tax it as a 0.8 Polo? :)

Those engines are notoriously bad. I would have a hard time justifying the expense of a new engine seeing that it would likely not be any more reliable. As said tho, more detailed info is required.
