Help with buying used car under €7000

    Hi guys,

I've been trawling DoneDeal and the like looking to buy a new car for the past month or so. I'm really not making any headway and looking for some advice. I'm looking for something reasonably fun to drive but also economical.

My current and previous cars are 75bhp and 55bhp respectively so anything that gets to 100kmh in ~9-10 seconds is fast by my book. I live out in the country with plenty of windy B roads about so it should make it's way around corners confidently.

It'll definitely be driven enough to warrant it being a diesel, will be putting 25,000+ km on it a year. The simpler the engine the better as I will do most mechanical work on it myself.

    The car should ideally be;

    Good on fuel, 6L/100km+ / 47MPG+
    2006 upwards, with low milage
Get to 100kmh in under 10 seconds.
    Corner well.
Have 4/5 seats, and a decent boot.

Here are some cars I've come up with:

    2008 Suzuki Swift Sport, 1.6 Petrol, 125bhp, €7000
    2006 Skoda Fabia VRS, 1.9 TDI, 130bhp, €4500
    2007 Skoda Octavia VRS, 2.0TDI, 170bhp, €7000
    06/07 Golf 1.9, TDI, 105bhp, €6000
    2006 BMW 118D, 2.0 Turbo diesel, 120bhp, €6000

If any, which of these cars would you recommend? Or better yet, which car not on the list would you recommend?

Only problem is that I'm a young male driver so from an insurance point of view do any of the cars above stand out like a sore thumb?

    Any help is much appreciated,

    Peter.

You have a list of cars that may cost a hell of a lot to insure. Might be worth your while checking out an 06/07 Ford Focus instead of the Golf as they come in a 1.6 diesel, and that might be easier on your pocket. Best of luck

Hey, cheers for the reply. I'm aware that my insurance will probably sky-rocket for most of these cars. I enjoy driving and I'm more than happy to pay the premium associated with driving one of them. I've got two quotes from my current insurer for a 1.9 TDI 90bhp Golf and a 1.9 TDI 105bhp Golf and they were both very reasonable. Will ring about the Fabia and 118D today.

Had a look at the 1.6 diesel Focus, plenty of cheap ones out there, the 107bhp version seems nippy enough. What are these like to drive? Any common problems with them? Easy enough to service? Thanks for the help.

1.6 diesel Hyundai i30 and Kia Ceed are worth looking at too, 115bhp and relatively nippy.

I haven't had any experience of the focus, but at the same time I haven't heard complaints about them as with the Golf. You just don't know what your getting. I've known people who've had them, and wouldn't buy another because they found them so unreliable, but I've known people to have them and just buy them again and again and again. As your are looking more in the 2 litre diesel market. I had a quick look on Done Deal myself, and was quite surprised at the used Audi market. I realised that you could go for something sleek sexy and superb triple S for your budget. An 05 to 07 Audi A4 or A6. A bit less of the triple S but still stylish. An 07 to 08 Passat or Volvo S40, and you might even get the Highline version of the Passat in your budget. Best of luck
