Registering/ paying vrt on a French reg car owned more than 3 months

Bit of a tricky situation. I'm Irish and have been living between France and Ireland for a few years. I'm a freelancer and come home to work often while staying in parents house. Work in Ireland has picked up recently and looks like I'll be staying here mostly, problem is that I have a French reg car which I brought over more than 5 month ago now, so way over the vrt deadline. Would have registered sooner if I'd known id be staying for so long. What options do I have re registration / vrt? Do I really have to provide proof of date of transit? Or would I get away with saying I just got off the boat....

Call them up and ask. I am in the same boat with my own UK car, which I need to register in the next few weeks. Its been in my name for 2 years in the UK, and I was going over and back with it for a while, but I flew back after Christmas and left it here, just using it occasionally until the tax was out.

Im paying the vrt on mine, but if you want to import it as a personal import, you need to get a clearance from revenue first. The fellas in the NCT dont seem to ask too many questions, but you can be sure the sh*tehawks in revenue will give you a grilling. :)
