I am on disability, today I got a unannounced visit from a social welfare inspector. My circumstances have not changed i have been on disability for 3 years. Don't they normally send a letter to let you know they are coming. He asked for bank statements even though i gave they one with my application. I don't have any since I get e-statements.

They are perfectly entitled to carry out inspection. They are after all paying your living expenses. It is straight forward to request printed statement from any of the banks, if you require them.

Its unannounced so that they can check to make sure that you have the same circumstances as when you applied. if they let you know, some people (not meaning you BTW) would try and pull the wool over their eyes to continue claiming where they are not entitled. The bank statements would be to check that you've (in my opinion)
    a) not started working and being paid
    b) came into a lump sum
    c) undeclared the first time you applied
    d) if you have a new nest egg they would be questioning then how you are funding your day to day expenses

Its probably just random selection so I wouldn't be worried that they singled you out
