why is my fan going on and off

Ok so we kind of use the computer from dawn to dusk. Recently the fan would just start up and then die down and again later and again and so on. not much running in the background except the Gom player. Any ideas?

Probably overheating. Take off the covers and look for accumulated dust especially around rhe vents.
