So as the economy improves will we see many buyers of Golf R's and the like trading up to the 340i or will any of them be seen on the roads??

    From WhatCar
340i. It gets an all-new, turbocharged six-cylinder engine producing 322bhp, and can reach 62mph from rest in 5.2 seconds. It’s cleaner than the old 335i, too, emitting 152g/km as an automatic.

With tax 390 quid surely we reached a point where tax won't be a concern for anybody with cash to spare or will we just see the new 3 cylinder 318i's?

They are savagely impressive figures in fairness....

Still won't be popular in Ireland though... Sure look at the VW Passat as an example. The 2.0 TDI is better in every single ways well as the same to tax so excluding company buyers, why bother going for the 1.6...?

    Because Irish logic.

To be fair, it's €5,500 more to get a highline 2.0 over a highline 1.6

It's £1100 extra in the UK.

the audi a7 6 pot diesel is now E270 a year to tax. Are the manufacturers passing on the big drops in vrt or are they pocketing most or all of it for themselves?

Someone spending 40-50k on a car is not going to worry about a few hundred in motor tax.

the motor tax rates will also effect depriciation and the vrt rate. when you coming down to the low rates of E390 and below, where they are all low, I agree, you wouldnt think it would or should make much difference to most buyers...

List price of one of those in ireland is still.going to be huge. People spending that money probably want something a bit different from a 3 series, even a very good 3 series.

A 235i is 70k for example. I do like the idea that they are bringing the emissions down on performance petrol and getting reasonable mpg too. Lower vrt, lower tax and lower running costs on fast petrol cars is a good thing!

this is coming from the biggest bm fanboi there is, but I think some of their prices are laughable! You can now get a facelift audi a7 from E67,500 with a 6 pot diesel with E270 motor tax, I know what I would take. Its E46,280 for the most basic 4 pot SE petrol, 4 series!

Who the hell is driving these things, the depreciation and interest is a killer, look at what you pay for an 06,07,08 6 series, 7 series, s class etc, even with those motor tax rates, those cars are vastly cheaper to own...
