Dublin obviously has a homeless issue. However one thing I can't get head around is that there seems to only ever be one beggar per major bridge.

Is this a limit placed by cops or just a sort of turn taking going on among the homeless around that area.

Where's O'Connelly bridge? Was it named after the love child of James Connolly, Daniel O'Connell and some early experimental surrogate?

Actually they are thinking of changing its name to the Daniel o donell bridge, that will move them ...

I've seen scobies come and kick homeless off the bridges and sit in there spots with lovely €180 Nike airs. sticking out of the sleeping bag!

I've never seen a homeless person on O'Connell bridge. It's tiny, there wouldn't be room for somebody to sit there and people get past, and usually people are too busy feeding the ducks to even notice anyway.

Wait, are we talking about the O'Connell bridge in St. Stephen's Green or a different one?

Yes, yes, alright then, I admit it, I'm just showing off how clever I am that I knew the name of the bridge in the Green and probably being a bit of a smart arse too but meh, that's how I roll. Haterz gonna hate.

From Marion square to St stephens green has many many people asking for money I saw them on sat. It's generally only one on the bridge. I would say it's to be savy.

I love the haypenny bridge Inn... :-) Sometimes around there there is a guy or in one of the lanes to Temple bar.

Dublin is a horrible place. Can we remove it from all discussion on AH before I get sick please :)

It is a business for many of such people.

Tax free too. We should think of that when we get our own payslips!

There is no need for anyone to beg in this country, we have a very generous SW system. Paid for by those who work and contribute. so there.

Money for drugs and drink. Hey ho, easy pickings.

Street beggars are parasites IMV, and I would not give them a penny. Sorry, but there ya go. They are not beggars, but business.

They are nearly always part of organized begging networks but it is by genuine homeless people. Often it's to get them into a shelter for the night.

A high percentage of their income is reported to go on illegal substances for some it's true. But I would rather err on the safe side.

I have given pasta from the deli often or a sandwich and a hot drink. You can do that do.

I have never been an addict. I don't know what it's like.

It's your choice. But I just see someone who is very vulnerable.

People have often been kind to me in a way I can't repay. I guess this is my way of doing it.

Friend of mine works for Focus Ireland, she says pretty much anyone you see sleeping rough at night is there because they are not allowed drink/get high in the accommodation provided and they'd rather do that then have a bed for the night.

The Ha'penny bridge inn is one of most favourite bars in Dublin. Manys the hour I've wiled away there.

Coming from the all-knowing, all-understanding one whose biggest concern when attending a funeral is what to wear. How profound. How empathetic.

Are you stalking me or what :D

Look, we are contributing millions to charities via our taxes. Subsidies go to homeless charities and the like via the taxes of those that work and contribute. SW benefits are very generous here too. We also give 650million to Foreign Aid ever year through our taxes.

So as a nation we are very caring to the most vulnerable. Some choose not to accept help from organisations that will get them a bed, food etc. That is their choice, but why should we subsidise them AGAIN, by throwing more money in a cup?

Anyway, I have empathy for the old timers. Those who are not savvy enough to access the myriad of support networks that abound, and who may not be well up enough to claim assistance from SW. Food and a hot drink is what I get for them. And they are so grateful.

The younger "business" beggars have thrown it away, or at me even, because they want money only. Lesson learned for me anyway.

And BTW my post re the funeral, was to ensure that I would not be disrespectful. So is that wrong too?

I think you should throw an egg in a cup.
