Hi my wife runs a Montessori school from a purpose built building out our the back of our house. Is she allowed to claim rent for the use of the building in our garden, and can she claim travel expenses when driving her own car to and from shops to buy materials for her school.

Who is she paying the rent she wants to claim to? You/herself?
Then either of you are liable for tax on the rent received. It's not worth it, so don't claim IMHO.

As for travel to/from suppliers? I would say yes but, as per usual with tax, others may disagree.

What type of car insurance does she have? If it is the standard type it is for social, domestic and personal use, which includes everyday driving such as visiting friends, the shops or a day out, but does not cover her when driving to buy and deliver products for her business.;)
