Hi guys so im looking to buy a new car. Has been driving a 1.9 passat but tax is too high. Have around a 4000 budget and at a max 5000. Looking for a solid sturdy diesel car with low tax and fuel efficient. Year doesn't really matter. Was looking at opel astra hatchback in the 1.2 diesel, the 1.6 ford focus, the 1.4 mini, ford mondeo or the opel vectra. Any suggestions? Have any of ye any experience with any of the above cars?

I haven't had any experience with the Ford Focus, but I'd certainly give a 1.6 diesel a try. There are plenty of 07's on Done Deal in your price range. I wouldn't go for one older than 06.

Thanks for reply. Yeah I love the look of the focus hatchback. Wondering if it would be reliable though what put me off was how cheap they are in comparison to similar cars and I was wondering if there was a reason for that!

The annual tax on a pre 08 Passat 1.9TDI is €676.

The annual tax on a pre 08 Focus 1.6tdci is €514.

You are planning on spending €4000-5000 in order to save €162 per year?

The only Mondeo and Vectra diesels in your budget will be 1.9 or 2.0 litre which is the same as your Passat.

OP is there any other reason you are changing car other than the cost of motor tax? Your budget doesn't really get you into the 08+ lower motor tax range so you might be better off keeping the Passat if there is nothing wrong with it. Your 5k budget will buy you alot of motor tax on the Passat.
